We believe that every project we touch should be a win. Our growing track record says that we're headed in the right direction.
Set to unfold at the famous Rod Laver Arena - home to the Australian Open grand slam - the 2018 OPL finals was the first return to a live finals event for the league since 2016.
See how we added value to the show for both live and online audiences.
Forming part of the Melbourne Esports Open, the OPL Finals was to be run on the main stage. Unlike previous Riot events in Oceania, almost all of the set was digital which is where we came in.
Traditionally, stage backdrops were formed with physical elements (crafted, painted and printed media) but as eSports grows and expands, the move towards an entirely digital canvas makes a lot of sense. This of course, is a digital designer's dream.
Having designed static stage backdrops before, this was an opportunity to deliver more to the audiences both online and live.

Working directly with Riot's production team, we set out to design what would essentially form the main stage for the event.
Our designs would utilise the digital aspect of the backdrops, allowing for coordination of content with what was happening live on stage.
The backdrops would be built and coded into Xpression (broadcast engine) that also runs the primary broadcast, allowing the broadcast team to control every element in a familiar way.

Animations! Nearly all sequences were keyed natively in Xpression.

As a side project, we also helped add a bit of flare to the opening title sequence.
Tying in the strong team-colour oriented visuals of the set, we overlayed glitched text with subtle masking reveal animations to a supplied black and white edit.
An amazing event that gave us a chance to stretch our creative legs.
To design and create something that is able to clearly add value directly to a product's goals is super satisfying. The 2018 OPL Finals was a great spectacle that we are proud to have played a role in delivering.
Having an intimate knowledge of eSports, gaming and League of Legends helped us focus in on delivering a stage package that complemented the live action and could engage the fans sitting in the crowd.
